The fishing and cruise ship season is well under way here in Ketchikan and we will being doing our best to post weekly updates to keep our guests informed on the fishing and conditions. This past week has given us all the different weather conditions one might see in south east Alaska. From sunny days requiring short sleeves to heavy rain and gusty winds we have made the most of each charter and played the cards we have been dealt!
May 30th produced heavier winds and kept us from the prime halibut grounds. We were able to fish more protected waters near town that can be good halibut fishing. We ended the day with a variety of rockfish, cod, and shark species.
June 1st was Ketchikans king salmon opener and we were fishing the herring cove area bright and early with our guests off the royal princess. Light rain and wind didn’t stop our guests from enjoying their morning and they were successful in catching multiple king salmon and keeping the two largest to send home.
June 2nd allowed us to roam freely to our preferred halibut fishing grounds with our in town guests. Limits of keeper halibut were caught while on anchor. As is often the case with halibut fishing the cod, flounders, and other bottom fish started biting quickly while the first halibut bite came an hour and fifteen minutes into the morning. Once the first one came aboard the rest of the boat had limits caught within a half an hour. While jigging for lingcod that afternoon we were also able to catch and release a beautiful 100 pound halibut.
Saturday and Sunday we will be resting up and performing maintenance in preparation for more fishing starting Monday!
